1873 Modoc War Tour Map

Abstract

Modoc War was an armed conflict between the Native American Modoc tribe and the United States Army in northeastern California and southeastern Oregon from 1872 to 1873. Collection contains a tour guide with a map and lists of sites and museums related 1873 Modoc War. Accompanied by small photographs with descriptions. Supplemented by a chronological timeline of events and an alphabetical list of historical sites. Created and donated by Daniel Woodhead III.

Abstract

The Modoc War was known as one of the costliest of the 19th-Century Indian Wars. It lasted for 8 months between 1872 and 1873. Francis S. “Van” Landrum was a businessman and self-taught structural engineer/land surveyor in Klamath Falls, Oregon as well as a noted amateur historian and author. Collection contains a map drawn by Landrum that includes all the major points of importance related to the Modoc War.

Camp Warner was a United States Army outpost in south-central Oregon in 1866-1874. The Camp was located at two different sites approximately 35 miles apart in what is today Lake County. Collection consists of a copy of a drawing of the New Camp Warner. Creator's name as written on the plan looks like S.O.L. Potter.

Jesse Douglas Carr was a California pioneer, politician, banker, stage contractor, prominent land owner and stock raiser. He was one of the largest and wealthiest land owners in California. Collection consists of copies of two plot maps, showing Jesse Carr's ranching activities in the California-Oregon border area and the property he bought from various persons in 1876, 1883, 1885, 1886, and 1887.

Russian Orthodox “Old Believers” fled Russia after the introduction of church reforms they refused to adopt. Many Russian families settled on farms in Oregon, tending land and sending their children to the local schools. Collection consists of a hand-drawn map with locations of Russian farms along the Highway 39, from Klamath Falls to Merrill.
